The United Nations leader is calling on countries to undo the suspension of funding for UNRWA.

On Sunday, the leader of the United Nations stated that the Organization is quickly addressing the highly concerning accusations that multiple UNRWA employees were connected to the terror attacks in southern Israel on October 7th.

The Office of Internal Oversight Services (OIOS), which is the top investigative organization in the United Nations, launched an investigation without delay.

Mr. Guterres stated that any United Nations employee who participates in acts of terrorism will face consequences, such as criminal prosecution.

He stated that the Secretariat is prepared to collaborate with a capable authority that can prosecute the individuals in accordance with the Secretariat’s standard procedures for cooperation.

On January 17, UNRWA’s Commissioner-General Philippe Lazzarini declared plans for a comprehensive and unbiased evaluation of the organization.

Nine out of the 12 people involved were promptly identified and fired by the head of UNRWA. One has been verified as deceased, and the identities of the other two are currently being confirmed.

Humanitarian efforts that are essential may be in danger.

More than two million Gaza Strip residents rely on crucial assistance from UNRWA. The organization manages shelters for a population of one million and has been offering nourishment and medical services since the beginning of the war.

Unfortunately, the current level of funding is not enough to fulfill all necessary obligations in order to provide support in February.

Recognizing the worries of the nations that stopped providing funds and expressing his own shock at the allegations, Mr. Guterres earnestly urged the governments that paused their contributions to ensure the ongoing operations of UNRWA.

“The reported reprehensible actions of these employees must have repercussions. However, the large number of UNRWA employees, including those in perilous environments for humanitarian workers, should not face punishment,” he stated.

“We must address the urgent needs of the vulnerable populations we assist.”
