The targeting of political dissidents by the Nicaraguan government is denounced by human rights authorities.

The statement expressed the belief that President Daniel Ortega and other top government leaders should be held responsible for the actions of Nicaragua as a country, which has targeted various groups including university students, indigenous communities, people of African descent, farmers, and members of Catholic and other Christian churches.

The allegation is made in their most recent report, which outlines the decline of the country’s condition over the past year.

Long-term objective

The investigation revealed that not only have there been instances of offenses, mistreatment, and wrongdoing aimed at dismantling active opposition actions, but there have also been efforts to silence all independent perspectives and deter any future groups or initiatives from rallying the community in the future.

The nation of Nicaragua is currently experiencing a cycle of aggression characterized by the targeting and harassment of any type of political opposition, regardless of its validity, within the country and beyond its borders. Jan Simon, the leader of this group, made this statement.

The experts observed that the Government’s progress towards silencing dissident voices has resulted in fewer instances of violations of the right to life and personal safety.

Instead, there has been a dramatic rise in violations designed to eliminate any opposition in the future.

‘Violations by extension’

Individuals who have departed from Nicaragua have also faced negative consequences, such as being stripped of their citizenship and being unable to obtain official documents, as well as lacking support from consular services.

The people of Nicaragua have been stripped of their citizenship and are unable to seek legal assistance. The family members of those who have suffered human rights abuses are also targeted and persecuted by the government, simply for their associations with individuals who oppose the government.

The authorities have stated that these indefinite actions that reach to children are especially severe, especially in cases where they pertain to minors who have been parted from their deportee parents or unable to enter Nicaragua due to restrictions. Additionally, a number of youth have been denied legitimate travel documents in order to reunite with their guardians.

The concentration of authority and control within the government.

The report emphasized how President Ortega and Vice-President Rosario Murillo have consolidated and centralized all State powers, especially their complete authority over the judiciary.

“Centralization of power not only ensures impunity for perpetrators, but also undermines efforts towards accountability, “said Ariela Peralta, one of the experts.

They demanded that the Government promptly release all individuals who have been unlawfully detained, and also called for the implementation of stronger sanctions targeting both individuals and organizations responsible for violating human rights.

The quoted individual stated that sanctions serve as a basic means of holding a country accountable where lack of consequences and suppressing democratic practices is the norm.

The UN Human Rights Council has authorized the formation of the Group of Human Rights Experts on Nicaragua, which operates independently.

Experts who are independent are not employed by the UN and do not get compensated for their services.
