On the anniversary of the coup, the UN Secretary-General urges an end to the Myanmar military’s violent campaign.

The UN Secretary-General’s representative emphasized the critical need for a switch to democratic leadership and the restoration of civilian authority in a statement released on Wednesday.

The statement declared that the Secretary-General denounces any acts of violence and urges for the safeguarding of civilians and the cessation of fighting.

The solution to this crisis must ensure that the citizens of Myanmar can freely and peacefully exercise their human rights. The military’s use of violence against civilians and political oppression must cease, and those responsible must be held accountable.

The leader of the United Nations urged ongoing global and local focus and unified joint efforts to aid the citizens of Myanmar.

The statement mentioned that Mr. Guterres is dedicated to collaborating with all involved parties, such as the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) and other regional organizations, in order to promote lasting and equitable peace in the area.

The Secretary-General expresses support for the citizens of Myanmar and their aspiration for a society that is inclusive, peaceful, and fair.

Deepening crisis

Early in the morning of February 1, 2021, the military arrested key political figures and government representatives in Yangon and other urban areas. This group included State Counsellor Aung San Suu Kyi and President Win Myint.

The acquisition led to a rise in armed confrontations throughout the nation, which included aerial attacks that resulted in the deaths of many innocent civilians, large-scale murders of prisoners, mutilation and disrespect of bodies, sexual assault, and purposeful destruction of entire communities.

After the military takeover, thousands of people were killed and more than two million were forced to leave their homes. In Myanmar, 18.6 million people, which is one third of the total population, now need humanitarian assistance, a significant increase from the previous number of one million.

Allowing unrestricted entry for humanitarian assistance is crucial, and the United Nations and aid organizations have urged for ongoing global assistance for vulnerable populations. In December 2023, they introduced a humanitarian response strategy worth $994 million to assist 5.3 million individuals who have been significantly impacted.

Violence must end

The Secretary-General denounced any type of violence and called for an immediate cessation of hostilities and political oppression, as well as the safeguarding of civilians.

Mr. Guterres expressed his worry about the military’s plan to hold elections amidst escalating conflict and violations of human rights throughout the nation.

The Secretary-General expresses support for the citizens of Myanmar and their goal of a fair and peaceful society. The statement also emphasizes the importance of safeguarding all communities, including the Rohingya, who are facing perilous journeys in their pursuit of safety, fundamental rights, and respect.
