Guterres strongly condemns attack in Iran; over 80 reportedly killed

According to Iranian authorities, over 170 individuals have also sustained injuries at the location.

According to local officials, news sources have reported that two blasts occurred while a large crowd was on their way to a cemetery in Kerman. This cemetery is where Qassim Suleimani, who was assassinated by a US drone strike in Baghdad four years ago, is buried.

According to reports, the use of remote control triggered explosions along the road, resulting in extensive destruction and disorder. The Iranian government has labeled this event as a terrorist attack.

Call for accountability

The UN Associate Spokesperson, Florencia Soto Niño, conveyed the Secretary-General’s sincere sympathies to the families and the citizens of the Islamic Republic of Iran. He also expressed well wishes for a quick recovery to those who were injured. This statement was made during a press briefing in New York at noon.

The leader of the UN urged for those who caused the fatal explosions to be held responsible.

As of now, there has been no acknowledgement of involvement in the attack.
