The FSB, or Federal Security Service of Russia, announced on Thursday that they killed a man from Belarus who intended to explode an administrative structure in Karelia, a northern region of Russia, on behalf of Ukraine.
The Federal Security Service (FSB) reported that the individual intended to utilize a makeshift explosive device in order to execute an assault in the city of Olonets, located approximately 250 kilometers away from the border of Russia and Finland.
The bureau posted a video depicting officers advancing towards a structure in a distant location and subsequently discharging weapons, followed by footage of a person lying on the ground.
Ukrainian officials have not yet commented on the matter.
A loud blast was heard in the southern Ukrainian city of Odesa while Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis were concluding their visit to the war-torn region.
The leader of Greece stated that while officials were preparing to enter their vehicles, they were startled by an explosion. He emphasized that this incident serves as a strong indication that Odesa is still caught in the grips of the ongoing war with Russia.
Mitsotakis stated that there is a difference between hearing about war and actually experiencing it firsthand.
According to Zelenskyy, the blast caused fatalities and injuries, though the exact number of casualties is unknown. “This demonstrates the disregard of our adversaries, as they do not discriminate in their targets,” he stated during a press conference.
Zelenskyy has consistently made trips to cities and military units along the front line in the midst of the war, keeping his visits secret until after departure. Leaders from other countries have also made frequent visits to Ukraine, particularly to the capital Kyiv, and have sometimes had to seek shelter in underground shelters when air raid sirens have gone off.
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, on the X social media platform, formerly known as Twitter, condemned what she called the “vile attack” during the Greek leader‘s visit. She called it a “new attempt at terror” by Russia.
President Zelenskyy accompanied Mitsotakis on a tour of the damage in Odesa caused by a recent significant attack from Russia. This attack resulted in the death of 12 individuals, including five children, on March 2 when a Russian drone struck an apartment building and caused debris to hit the structure.
Information for this report was gathered from The Associated Press, Agence France-Presse, and Reuters.
