Wheat from war-torn Ukraine to feed families affected by conflict in Sudan

The donation, which is a part of President Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s ‘Grain from Ukraine’ initiative, was delivered to the city of Port Sudan. The WFP has loaded the donation onto their trucks to be distributed as emergency food aid.

The United Nations organization is working tirelessly to promptly provide essential food aid to families facing severe food insecurity as clashes between competing military groups in Sudan continue into their 10th month.

Act now

Eddie Rowe, the Country-Director of WFP in Sudan, emphasized the need for urgent action to prevent the deteriorating humanitarian crisis in Sudan from worsening.

The employees are dedicated to efficiently and promptly providing food aid to families in need.

7,600 tonnes of wheat flour will be delivered to households, including those displaced by conflict and facing challenges in obtaining enough food on a daily basis.

Critical time

The German Federal Foreign Office funded the entire operational expenses of 15 million Euros for the shipment, which included transporting wheat from Ukraine to Sudan and carrying out its distribution within the country.

It has reached a crucial point due to ongoing conflicts that are intensifying before the upcoming scarcity of food and increased hunger during the lean season in May.

The generous contribution that WFP has received will allow them to assist individuals who have been greatly affected by the war. Mr. Rowe expressed appreciation to Ukraine and Germany for their support in helping the people of Sudan during this critical time of crisis.

Steadfast support

According to the agency, Germany has consistently shown support for WFP’s lifesaving efforts in Sudan and is currently the organization’s second biggest provider of donations.

In the previous year, the German authorities allocated roughly 30 million Euros to support WFP efforts in Sudan, guaranteeing access to crucial food aid for individuals affected by ongoing conflict.

The World Food Programme has issued a warning about an impending famine in the country with the arrival of the lean season. Currently, around 18 million individuals are struggling with severe food insecurity, with nearly five million experiencing emergency levels of hunger.

The United Nations agency has delivered immediate assistance and nourishment to approximately seven million individuals since the commencement of the conflict in April, but the demand for aid continues to increase.
