The United Nations leader is urging for an immediate ceasefire in Sudan, stating that the principles of Ramadan should take precedence.

The war between rival militaries Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), now in its eleventh month, has not only claimed thousands of lives but has created a massive internal displacement crisis.

Over six million individuals are currently seeking safety in Sudan, while 1.7 million have been compelled to escape to nearby countries.

The Secretary-General, António Guterres, addressed ambassadors at the Security Council and urged all sides involved in Sudan to adhere to a Ramadan truce.

“He urged all groups in Sudan to uphold the principles of Ramadan by observing a ceasefire during this time,” he stated.

“The end of hostilities must result in a permanent ceasefire throughout the country and establish a strong foundation for long-term peace for the people of Sudan,” he emphasized. He further emphasized that the importance of upholding the values of Ramadan.

Timing is crucial.

The request of the UN leader is in response to the immense scale of the humanitarian disaster in Sudan, where 25 million people, more than half the population, are in desperate need of life-saving aid.

The dispute has additionally forced 18 million people into severe food insecurity, which is the highest figure ever documented during a crop season.

“Our efforts, along with our humanitarian allies at the United Nations, are focused on alleviating this distress. However, we are encountering significant obstacles as we strive to provide aid to the millions of individuals in dire need,” stated Mr. Guterres.

He commended the recent actions taken by Sudanese leaders to make it easier for aid to be delivered, but emphasized the importance of continued work in areas where access is difficult, especially regarding long-standing lack of food resources.

The leader of the UN has urged combatants to grant quick and unrestricted humanitarian aid to vulnerable populations by using all possible means of transportation. They have also requested the international community to provide support for the 2024 Sudan Humanitarian Response Plan, which currently lacks necessary funding.

“Numerous lives are in danger and prompt action is crucial,” he emphasized.

Human rights crisis

The Secretary-General voiced concern about the growing violations of human rights, including random assaults, theft, unjust arrests, forced disappearances, abuse, and the enlistment and imprisonment of minors.

Reports of systematic conflict-related sexual violence, including rape and trafficking, added to the growing concerns.  

Mr. Guterres urged the parties involved to fulfill their duties according to international humanitarian law, specifically in safeguarding civilians and ensuring unobstructed access for humanitarian aid, as they have previously agreed to do so.

UNITAMS drawdown

Mr. Guterres gave thanks to the employees of UNITAMS for their committed work and urged for joint endeavors to assist Sudan in achieving lasting peace.

He encouraged us to not hold back in our efforts to help the people of Sudan achieve their rightful desires for a peaceful and secure future.

As of February 29th, UNITAMS concluded its operations in compliance with Security Council resolution 2715.
