The number of deaths has increased in the conflict between Russia and Ukraine due to an attack on a major city in central Ukraine.
“Ms. Brown, the UN Humanitarian Coordinator for Ukraine, expressed shock and dismay upon learning that families who had gathered for a peaceful evening at home were met with damaged homes and injured loved ones.”
Trapped under rubble
The UN Office in Ukraine reports that the attack resulted in significant destruction to a residential structure in the city of Kryvyi Rih, located in the Dnipro Region. Many individuals, including children, were trapped under debris and suffered injuries.
According to Ms. Brown’s statement, the event is a continuation of a series of assaults that are not restricted to areas close to combat and are aimed at civilian buildings and residences.
She stressed the fact that according to international laws, it is crucial to safeguard civilians and their infrastructure during times of conflict. This has had a significant negative impact on Ukraine.
The United Nations’ head aid representative restated the importance of protecting civilians from the atrocities of war and urged for an immediate halt to these assaults.
During its February 2024 report commemorating the two-year anniversary of Russia’s complete invasion of Ukraine, the UN Human Rights Monitoring Mission in the region declared that violence linked to the conflict resulted in the deaths of over 10,000 civilians and left nearly 20,000 injured. However, the actual figures are believed to be much higher.
Recent media coverage suggests that Ukraine has been carrying out increased attacks within Russian borders since the end of 2023. These attacks involve the use of armed drones, which have targeted military airfields and oil refineries, including one in Nizhny Novgorod on Tuesday.
