German Chancellor Angela Merkel addressed the United Nations General Assembly, urging the international community to have the courage to address and heal the current divides in the world.

Therefore, he declared that the current priority is increased cooperation among nations.

“Today, and particularly on this day, we require the bravery, innovative drive, and determination to bridge the gaps that have become even wider.”

A multipolar world

Chancellor Scholz declared that in the present day, there are no longer only two dominant superpowers, as was the case during the Cold War. Instead, there are now multiple sources of power and influence.

According to him, multipolarity is not a moral classification, but rather a depiction of the current state of affairs.

Emphasizing the significance of the United Nations in navigating a world with multiple powers, he stated that the Organization, guided by its Charter’s principles, has a distinct role in fulfilling the goal of equal representation and sovereignty for all nations.

According to Mr. Scholz, the UN holds more universal representation than other groups and blocs, such as G7, G20, or BRICS, which are also crucial for reaching global agreement.

Climate action

During his speech, the leader of Germany emphasized the importance of tackling human-caused climate change, which is considered to be one of the most pressing global issues.

He stressed the duties of both developed and developing nations, acknowledging that while more advanced countries have a considerable role to play in combatting climate change, many developing countries have also become significant contributors to worldwide emissions.

He encouraged us to work together and take action to reach the Paris climate targets, rather than relying on others. He also emphasized the importance of establishing specific goals at the upcoming COP28 conference in Dubai.

Reforms needed

Chancellor Scholz acknowledged the importance of revamping multilateral development banks, given the financial struggles that numerous countries are experiencing and the urgency of securing funds for essential global initiatives like addressing climate change and preserving biodiversity.

The speaker mentioned that Germany is promoting these changes and has committed significant assistance. This includes a remarkable investment of 305 million euros in the World Bank, which is expected to result in over two billion euros in extra loans.

Mr. Scholz commented that the United Nations needs to adjust to upcoming obstacles, such as utilizing technological advancements for the benefit of all.

He urged for worldwide conversations on the ethical utilization of artificial intelligence and emphasized the importance of updating the UN’s makeup to better reflect a diverse global landscape, particularly within the Security Council.

Many aspire for peace.

Chancellor Scholz acknowledged that for numerous individuals worldwide, achieving peace seems like an unattainable goal.

He stated that the aggressive actions of Russia have resulted in great suffering not just in Ukraine. The impact of inflation, rising debts, limited access to fertilizers, hunger, and poverty are being felt by people globally.

Due to the devastating impact this war is having globally, it is necessary and appropriate for the world to actively pursue peace.
