Efforts to provide food assistance to the distressed northern Gaza region have not been successful.
The WFP stated that the Israeli Defence Force (IDF) rejected a food convoy consisting of 14 trucks, which was the first attempt since the suspension of deliveries on February 20th, to enter northern Gaza. The convoy was held for three hours at the Wadi Gaza checkpoint before being turned back.
WFP Deputy Executive Director Carl Skau stated that despite the unsuccessful journey to the north, the organization remains committed to finding ways to deliver food to those in need.
Due to denial of access, the convoy was redirected and ultimately halted by a sizable group of desperate individuals who seized the provisions, making off with approximately 200 metric tonnes from the vehicles.
for long.
Highways are perceived as the sole choice for extended travel.
The organization emphasized that road transportation is the only solution for delivering large amounts of food to prevent famine in northern Gaza.
On Tuesday, the Royal Jordanian Air Force assisted in dropping six tons of food from the World Food Programme to aid approximately 20,000 people living in the northern region.
Mr. Skau emphasized that airdrops should be a last resort and cannot prevent famine.
“He stressed the importance of establishing access points in the northern region of Gaza, which will enable us to provide sufficient food for approximately 500,000 individuals facing severe deprivation.”
and poverty have an everlasting impact on individuals and communities
The enduring effects of severe hunger and poverty have devastating consequences for both individuals and communities.
The World Food Programme (WFP) also cautioned that the north is facing a humanitarian crisis with children dying from illnesses related to hunger and experiencing severe malnutrition.
A large-scale relief effort needs additional ways to enter Gaza, including from the northern area, and the utilization of Israel’s Ashdod port. It emphasized the urgency of a ceasefire in order to make this operation feasible.
Extremely challenging conditions
On Tuesday, the UN Spokesperson Stéphane Dujarric reported that workers handling water, sanitation, and hygiene in the enclave are facing very difficult circumstances due to the large number of people being displaced and the overcrowded shelters.
At the recent press briefing at the UN Headquarters in New York, Mr. Dujarric stated that based on their most recent evaluation, approximately 340 individuals are using one toilet, and the ratio is approximately 1 shower for every 1,300 people. He also highlighted that more than 80% of households in Gaza do not have access to safe and clean water.
UNICEF has been supplying fuel to run both public and private water sources and desalination facilities in response.
According to Mr. Dujarric, the organization has supplied over 50 emergency health kits for over 500,000 individuals. Additionally, they have provided sufficient newborn kits for 8,700 newborns.
