According to UN Women, approximately 9,000 women have lost their lives at the hands of Israeli forces during the ongoing war that began almost five months ago. However, this number is expected to be even greater given the number of women who have been reported missing under the rubble.

According to a recent press release, the United Nations Women agency stated that in this war, nobody is spared and women are suffering unprecedented levels of fatalities and injuries.

If the conflict persists, a total of 63 women will, on average, continue to lose their lives.

Approximately 37 mothers lose their lives daily, causing great devastation to their families and leaving their children with reduced protection.

Famine fears

This week, international organizations warned the Security Council about a potential famine in Gaza, where the complete population of 2.3 million individuals will soon experience extreme levels of food insecurity – the greatest percentage ever documented.

A recent investigation by UN Women surveyed 120 women and found that 84 percent reported their families now consume half or less of what they did prior to the start of the conflict.

Even though it is the responsibility of mothers and adult women to gather food, they are the last ones to eat and consume the smallest portions.

Mothers skipping meals

A majority of women reported that someone in their household was unable to have regular meals within the past week.

UN Women reported that in the majority of these situations, mothers sacrifice their own meals to ensure their children are fed, with this being the case in 95% of instances.

Approximately 90% of women stated that accessing food is more challenging for them compared to men. As a result, some are turning to searching for food in debris or garbage, or taking other drastic steps.

Humanitarian ceasefire now

According to a report by UN Women released in January, 10 out of 12 women’s organizations in Gaza were only partially functional during the conflict,

The organization stated that without a prompt ceasefire for humanitarian purposes, there will be an increased number of casualties in the upcoming days and weeks.

The violence must cease and necessary aid must be delivered promptly to Gaza.
