Armed organizations are continuing their campaign of terror throughout Burkina Faso.

The High Commissioner, Volker Türk, stated from Ouagadougou that his office has been actively communicating with the government, civil society, and others about the various human rights issues in the country. These challenges have arisen after a coup in January 2022, where Captain Ibrahim Traoré took control.

Solidarity visit

“I am present here to show my support for the citizens of Burkina Faso during this challenging period and to address the issue of human rights at the utmost level,” stated Mr. Türk.

The UN Human Rights Chief Volker Türk addresses the media at the end of his visit to Burkina Faso.

At the conclusion of his trip to Burkina Faso, UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Türk speaks to the press.

He expressed gratitude to Captain Traoré, in his role as President of the transition, adding that they had held in-depth and wide-ranging discussions “on the grave security situation”, the humanitarian crisis as well as climate change and environmental degradation.

The shrinking of civic space was addressed, along with the issues of inequalities and the importance of creating a new social agreement that includes the participation of all Burkinabe during the transition back to civilian rule.

The leader of OHCHR expressed deep sadness over the suffering of those in Burkina Faso, stating that 2.3 million individuals are experiencing food insecurity, over two million have been displaced within the country, and 800,000 children are unable to attend school.

Approximately 6.3 million individuals, out of a total population of 20 million, require humanitarian assistance.

Being taken off the schedule

“However, it has fallen out of focus on the global agenda and the available resources are simply not enough to adequately meet the needs of the people,” stated Mr. Türk.

Last year, the OHCHR recorded 1,335 instances of violating human rights and breaching humanitarian law, resulting in a minimum of 3,800 civilian casualties.

“Armed groups were responsible for the vast majority of violations against civilians in incidents involving more than 86 per cent of the victims. Protection of civilians is paramount. Such wanton violence must stop and the perpetrators held accountable.”

The individual mentioned that they recognized the important difficulties encountered by security forces and felt optimistic about the promises made to ensure that their actions align with international laws regarding humanitarianism and human rights.

According to him, the transition must now be carried out with a focus on human rights. He urged the global community to not overlook the pressing needs in Burkina Faso.
