On Monday, Hungarian truckers plan to hold a protest at the border crossing with Ukraine.

Police reported that Hungarian truck drivers are organizing a demonstration at the primary border crossing between Hungary and Ukraine for Monday. Their goal is to impede truck traffic as they call for limitations on Ukrainian truckers operating within the European Union.

According to a response from the police to questions sent by Reuters via email, a protest will take place where approximately twelve trucks will partially obstruct the main road leading to the Zahony crossing. The police have granted permission for this demonstration.

The police did not disclose the duration of the protest, however, according to index.hu, the intention was to temporarily obstruct the road to the border until the end of December.

Since February 2022, truck drivers from Ukraine no longer need to obtain permits in order to enter the European Union due to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. In response, haulers in eastern Europe have pushed for limitations on the amount of Ukrainian trucks allowed into the EU.

Tivadar Arvay, the general secretary of the Association of Hungarian Road Haulers, stated to the state news agency MTI that they have requested the European Union to reevaluate their agreement with Ukraine and take into account the concerns of haulers from EU member countries, including Hungary.

Recently, there have been long lines of trucks at the Poland-Ukraine border as Polish truck drivers have caused roadblocks at three different crossing points.
