During the United Nations General Assembly’s annual general debate, Mr. Al-Burhan, the President of the Transitional Sovereign Council, addressed the ongoing war in Sudan that began on April 15th when the Rapid Support Forces launched an attack on the Sudanese people.

The speaker characterized the paramilitary groups as rebels who have joined forces with a variety of tribal, regional, and international militias and mercenaries from various parts of the globe. According to him, they have been committing horrific acts of violence against the people of Sudan.

Additionally, he stated that efforts were made to erase the cultural heritage of Sudanese citizens by destroying museums, courts, and civil registries. He also mentioned the release of imprisoned terrorists and individuals sought by international courts.

“They have committed acts of murder, theft, sexual assault, robbery, and confiscated the homes and possessions of citizens. Additionally, they have caused damage to infrastructure and government buildings.”

A potential trigger for conflict in the area

According to Mr. Al-Burhan, the involvement of rebel forces in seeking assistance from mercenaries and terrorist organizations from various parts of the world has elevated this conflict to a danger for both regional and global peace and security. He also warned that this situation could potentially ignite a larger war that would not only spread but also devastate the entire region.

He stated that the rebels have caused the death of many and forced millions of people to leave their homes. He emphasized that the Government has taken action in response to peace initiatives from IGAD and other organizations, including the Jeddah meeting organized by the United States, Saudi Arabia, Turkey, and South Sudan. However, the rebels have rejected all initiatives and continue to engage in genocide.

Mr. Al-Burhan thanked the Secretary-General and the United Nations and its agencies for their support and humanitarian aid. The Government has opened ports and airports and allowed convoys to bring assistance to people in need.

He urged all organizations to address the deficiencies and provide the necessary resources for the basic needs of the Sudanese population, including food, medicine, and shelter.

Committed to transition

The President of the Transitional Sovereign Council has emphasized their commitment to a peaceful and lawful transfer of power to the people of Sudan. This would involve a brief transition period focused on addressing current security, humanitarian, and economic issues, followed by general elections.

The individual expressed dedication to assisting women, children, and marginalized groups, as well as achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). They noted that the halt on outside aid has hindered progress towards these global goals. The individual once more urged donors to address the ongoing humanitarian crisis in Sudan.
