Officials from the United Nations are expressing strong disapproval of the Russian airstrikes targeting energy facilities in Ukraine.

The Deputy Spokesperson, Farhan Haq, stated on Friday that the Secretary General of the United Nations, António Guterres, strongly denounced the significant missile and drone assaults.

Guterres is horrified by the targeting of innocent civilians.

The Secretary-General expressed shock at the ongoing violence and devastation. He reiterated that any harm to civilians or civilian structures goes against international laws and cannot be tolerated, urging for an immediate end to such attacks. Mr. Haq made these statements.

Multiple types of missiles and drones were launched throughout the early morning hours, disrupting water supplies in some areas and leaving more than 1.5 million Ukrainians without electricity across Kharkiv, Dnipropetrovsk, Zaporizhzhia, Poltava, Odesa, Donetsk, Sumy and Kirovohrad.

The deliberate destruction of energy facilities that serve critical public needs is a clear and uncompromising matter, according to Izumi Nakamitsu, the UN High Representative for Disarmament Affairs, who addressed the Security Council on Friday. Nakamitsu stated that the extent and magnitude of the resulting destruction is shocking and unacceptable.

During the early hours of the morning, various types of missiles and drones were deployed, causing disruptions to access to water in certain regions. This resulted in over 1.5 million individuals in Kharkiv, Dnipropetrovsk, Zaporizhzhia, Poltava, Odesa, Donetsk, Sumy, and Kirovohrad being left without electricity.

The principles of humanitarian law must be upheld.

UN agencies present at the location strongly condemned the deliberate attacks. UN Humanitarian Coordinator Denise Brown stated that response efforts have been initiated to assist those living in impacted regions.

I am appalled by the scale of the recent assaults on Ukraine’s energy infrastructure carried out by the Russian Armed Forces,” she stated, also noting that UN organizations are currently collaborating with allies to provide assistance to individuals in Ukraine who require it.

According to her, the recent attacks on critical civilian infrastructure have worsened the already severe humanitarian crisis in Ukraine and have had a significant impact. She emphasized that international laws that protect civilians and their infrastructure must be upheld.

Agreeing with those worries, Danielle Bell, the leader of the UN Human Rights Monitoring Mission in Ukraine, declared that the recent attack is the most significant assault in the past year specifically aimed at the country’s essential power and water systems. The consequences for the civilian population could be catastrophic.

Affected nuclear and water facilities

According to UN agencies, the biggest dam in Ukraine, situated in Zaporizhzhia city, sustained damage but is currently stable.

According to a statement from the International Agency for Atomic Energy (IAEA) on Friday morning, the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant lost electricity to its only remaining main power line for approximately five hours today. The statement also provided a time line of the incident.

Rafael Grossi, the Director General of the IAEA, stated that the ongoing threat to Europe’s biggest nuclear power plant is rightfully receiving worldwide attention. The risk of a direct hit or loss of external power is a major concern.

The most recent incidents strongly emphasize the constant risks to nuclear safety and security during times of conflict, according to the speaker. They also pointed out that the South Ukraine Nuclear Power Plant experienced a brief outage in one of its power lines due to the attacks that occurred overnight.
