Russian forces used unmanned aerial vehicles to attack multiple sites in Ukraine prior to the anniversary of their invasion.
According to the Ukrainian military, there was an attack by Russian forces last night involving 10 drones and a missile.
The Ukrainian air force reported that their air defenses successfully took down eight drones in the Poltava, Dnipropetrovsk, Zaporizhzhia, and Kharkiv regions.
On February 24, 2022, Russia initiated an invasion of Ukraine. As the two-year mark approaches, the leaders of the Group of Seven major industrial nations will convene a virtual meeting on Saturday to discuss their aid for Ukraine.
On Wednesday, Karine Jean-Pierre, the press secretary for the White House, informed reporters that President Volodymyr Zelenskyy of Ukraine will be joining the discussions and that the group will discuss ways to collectively hold Russia responsible.
On Friday, the United States will announce additional sanctions against Russia for their actions in Ukraine and the death of Alexey Navalny while in custody.
On Wednesday, State Department representative Matthew Miller informed journalists that the United States’ response will consist of a comprehensive set of sanctions, but did not reveal any specifics prior to the official announcement.
Miller stated that they are constantly searching for new methods to hinder the Russian military’s actions, such as cutting off their access to necessary components from the military industrial complex. They also aim to hold those responsible for the war effort accountable.
On Wednesday, the European Union reached a decision to implement its own set of sanctions against Russia.
The penalties entail prohibiting approximately 200 individuals and organizations from engaging in business activities with companies within the EU or visiting the region.
“According to EU foreign policy chief Josep Borrell, our package enables us to further combat entities that participate in bypassing sanctions, particularly within the defense and military industries.”
The sanctions also include Chinese companies involved in supplying military technology to Russia, in addition to Russian firms.
EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen stated that it is crucial to continue weakening Putin’s military capabilities. She mentioned that there are a total of 2,000 listings in place to maintain pressure on the Kremlin. Additionally, efforts are being made to limit Russia’s use of drones.
