The Deir Al-Balah Preparatory School, which is one of over 700 schools managed by UNRWA, the United Nations agency for Palestinian refugees, has very little open space in its yard or classrooms. The previously used sports and play area is now occupied by tents.

Ayman Ibrahim Jouda used to teach mathematics to fifth-grade students. Before, he says, it was ‘a citadel of science and education’. With no children to teach, Mr. Jouda has turned to supporting displaced people, trying to answer the questions of those forced to move from other parts of the Strip.

Abdulrahman al-Shami, a teacher at the Deir Al-Balah shelter, was forced to leave Gaza City due to the conflict on 7 October. He acknowledges that UNRWA has been providing excellent education services. However, he expresses that life in the shelter is challenging and unpleasant. He holds onto hope for a better future and the opportunity to return to his previous life.

I had conversations with several children who have been denied access to education. One of them shared her aspiration of becoming a journalist in the future.

She is currently residing in a tent, enduring harsh weather and limited access to clean water. Another adolescent recounted the destruction of their school before they were forced to flee with their parents to Deir Al-Balah.

Pharmacist Sulafa Abu Hilal organized an event to offer psychological support to children who have been through over 100 days of war.

Mr. Abu Hilal proclaims that children have the right to live freely and play without fear. The purpose of this event was to promote a safe environment where children can fully embrace and enjoy their childhood.

There are plans for similar events to take place at the clinic and two other locations in Rafah, aimed to benefit both children and their parents. According to Mr. Abu Hilal, amidst their fear and despair, they found a glimmer of hope in the darkness.
