A group of U.S. senators from both political parties voiced increasing worry on Friday regarding the military partnership between North Korea and Russia. They emphasized the importance of ongoing U.S. assistance to Ukraine in light of this development.

According to separate statements given to VOA’s Korean Service reporter Joeun Lee, legislators stated that the collaboration between North Korea and Russia could benefit both countries in terms of improving their military strength.

Democratic Senator Chris Coons of Delaware expressed worry over North Korean artillery potentially aiding Russia during a crucial moment, and the use of North Korean ballistic missiles in brutal assaults on civilian areas in Ukraine.

Nebraska’s Republican Senator Pete Ricketts emphasized the importance of providing additional funding to Ukraine due to the relationship between Russia and North Korea. This funding, which is currently being held up in a budget and immigration dispute between the House of Representatives and the White House, must be made a priority.

Ricketts stated that our main objective is to provide assistance to our ally. He emphasized the importance of ensuring that Ukrainian troops have access to necessary weapons for defense.

Senator Tim Kaine, a member of the Democratic Party representing Virginia, stated that the increasing alliance between Russia and North Korea, as well as China and Iran, demonstrates that America’s enemies are recognizing the strength of partnerships.

According to Kaine, the United States has a strong advantage in its alliances, but historically has not utilized them in the same manner. However, there is a growing recognition of the benefits of these partnerships, and efforts are being made to establish clear lines of cooperation that have not previously existed.

Senator Chris Van Hollen, a Democrat from Maryland, agreed with Ricketts’ statement stating that the continuous trade of weapons between North Korea and Russia indicates the need for action from the U.S. Congress.

Van Hollen emphasized the urgency of Congress passing the supplemental appropriations and providing Ukraine with necessary military support to protect themselves.
